Yesterday evening felt very special for me as a filmmaker. After a first meeting, lots of phone calls and emails I could finally visit the music rehearsals at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Composer Wilma Pistorius writes beautiful and completely original music for the film. The footage really comes to life when you hear the music being played by the musicians and you realize how much it actually contributes. I think it’s really special that this music is written especially for this documentary film and that it fits the footage of the dancers perfectly. I’m really excited about the results but I can already tell you it’s going to be awesome!
Roxette is currently on the second leg of their world tour and after playing at the Bospop festival last year they came back to the Netherlands yesterday to play the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. I’ve taken pictures and done interviews at previous Roxette shows for the Daily Roxette, but this time I wanted to take it even further. I came up with the idea to make a ‘mini-documentary’ about Roxette, specifically about the fan – exclusively for the Daily Roxette.
I started out by interviewing the fans while they were waiting at the venue for the doors to open. I contacted most of them beforehand, some of their stories are really amazing and emotional. It was quite a challenge to shoot outside in this busy, uncontrolled environment but I’m very pleased with the footage I’ve seen so far.
After hearing all the fan stories it was time to talk to the band. I had my own ‘interview room’ where I could set up lights, cameras and audio, everything was arranged perfectly!
After the interviews backstage it was time to head intro the main room to shoot some footage during the concert itself. Not only what happened on stage, but also the screaming fans in the front row.
I’m really happy with the footage I got, everything looks great and the content of the interviews is exactly what I needed (and more)! The finished result will be published on the Daily Roxette.

During a cultural festival the dancers performed fragments from the show at a very small theater.

We did a multicam recording of the show using three Sony PMW-EX1 cameras (1 regular, 2 ‘R’s). For audio we used a Zoom H4n with stereo sounds from the room and stereo inputs directly from the mixer.

Saturday started with a dress rehearsal, the perfect time for us to adjust the settings of our cameras, take photographs and shoot some backstage footage! The main camera for the documentary footage shot backstage was the 7D in a ‘run&gun’setup with a Canon 35mm 2.0 lens and a Zacuto Z-finder. Jessica used a camcorder for additional footage.
I put a Zoom H4n on the overview camera to do a 4 channel recording of the sound (stereo room and stereo from the mixer).
Friday, the day before the big show weekend – dancers, technicians, teachers and volunteers are busy making preparations. We went down to the venue to do some camera testing.
Since we will be doing a multicam registration of the show as well as shooting backstage footage for the documentary, preparation and packing took quite some time!
We use three XDCAM cameras that had to be set up properly beforehand.
Check out the new trailer for my first documentary, “Achter Het Gordijn” (Behind The Curtain)!
The film tells the story of an amateur ballet ensemble preparing for their recital. The film is currently in production, you can read more on the dedicated page.
Check out the production blog for regular updates, behind-the-scenes footage and lots of pictures!
